There are tons of bars throughout Austin, and regardless of what part of town you’re staying in, we’ve got recommendations based on location. For more favorites, check out our Happy Hour Guide.

Downtown

Container Bar – This Rainey Street bar is built out of repurposed shipping containers and the patio is hard to beat when the weather is nice. The containers allow you to section off areas for your crew (if some privacy is desired), and they also provide a cool backdrop for photos.

Bungalow – Also on Rainey Street, this massive patio gets packed on weekend evenings. Be sure to check out their “I hate you so much” mural, the angrier twin of the iconic mural on South Congress.

Banger’s Sausage House – If you’re visiting from out of town, Banger’s is a great place to get an authentic taste of Texas. They have a massive patio and often smoke whole hogs on the weekends. Be sure to try the ‘man-mosa’ a massive mug filled with a whole bottle of bubbles, topped off with a splash of OJ.

P6 – This rooftop bar at The Line hotel overlooks Lady Bird Lake, the Austin skyline, and Congress Ave, so if you’re in need of a good view or a little Instagram moment, P6 is for you.

Roosevelt Room – Touted as being one of the best craft cocktail bars in the city, Roosevelt is housed in the warehouse district in a building built in 1929. The dark and classy interior is a great place to beat the heat with strong cocktails.

Roosevelt Room

Garage Bar – It’s exactly what it sounds like, a small craft cocktail tucked into the bottom of a parking garage. This spot is great for smaller groups and the drinks are excellent.

Midnight Cowboy – This secret bar on sixth street is marked only with a red light above the door and requires a password for entry. Reservations are required and they do ask that you keep conversations to a minimum.

Barbarella – If you’re looking to dance, this is the best spot in town for it. They have dance floors both inside and out, and a plethora of DJs throughout the week and on weekends.

Eastside

Nickel City – Maybe a dive bar, maybe a craft cocktail bar, definitely a good time. Be sure to try whatever frozen concoction they’ve got that day and grab a couple of sliders from Delray Cafe, the food trailer on their shotgun patio.

Kitty Cohen’s – This one has a super cute design inside and pool vibes out on the patio. The pool isn’t just there for looks, grab a drink and wade on in there.

Whisler’s – This spot often gets nods for making the best old fashioned in the city, but that’s not the only drink they do well. All of their cocktails are handmade and the menu changes frequently. On weekends, be sure to check the secret mezcal bar tucked away upstairs.

North

Drinkwell – Cozy gastropub on 53rd Street presenting eclectic plates and innovative cocktails in a stylish setting.

Wonder Bar – Located in Domain’s Rock Rose, this place has been described as the “most immersive and interactive bar” serving up inventive cocktails in unique drinkware.

Yard House – Boasting the largest selection of beers in the Austin area, this spot is nestled in vibrant Domain Northside.

Austin Happy Hour Guide

People always ask us, what is your favorite thing to talk about? Two words: Happy Hour. Happy Hour is where things happen; you build relationships and have engaging conversations without the noise of a late night bar scene. You have the ability to try multiple culinary creations and inexpensive beverages—all while still being in bed at a reasonable hour. Sounds like the perfect combination to us!

Austin Happy Hours are their own food group. Not lunch, not dinner—Happy Hour. Below you’ll find our guide to the best Happy Hour scenes in three of the buzziest neighborhoods: Downtown, The East Side, and The 04 (South). Be sure to tune into our Podcasts on these three areas.

Downtown Austin

We scoured the Downtown restaurant and bar scene to find the best of the best. This is not a guide to dirty 6th street, or even West 6th or Rainey. This is a specially curated list of hidden gems and local favorites with some of the best deals in town.

The East Side

East of the glorious I-35 highway is home to some of the best restaurants and bars Austin has to offer. It has a mix of grunge, hipster, and true Austin eclectic dining, which makes it the perfect area to experience the ATX culinary scene.

South Austin & the 78704 Zip Code

The “04”, as Austinites call it, is home to the iconic streets of South Congress (SoCo), South 1st, and South Lamar. Within the 78704 zip code of South Austin, this area is just south of Downtown and the Colorado River. It is known for holding deep Austin roots of everything the funky South Side has to offer. The 04 has some of the most expensive homes in well-known Travis Heights, Bouldin Creek, Zilker, and Barton Hills neighborhoods, which has cultivated tried and true Austin staples, as well as Michelin star producing culinary dreams. All of this combined, makes it one of our favorite places to HH.

Find The Best Austin Brewery For You

Austin is famous for a lot of things. Live music, world-class barbecue, and hippies notwithstanding, the city is now a brewery mecca. In the past five years, the craft beer industry is booming in the Capital City, thanks to a dozen or so very dedicated brewers cropping up in the area. None of them are run-of-the-mill, boring taprooms, and all are worth visiting (because, at the very least … beer). Here are a bunch of our local favorites:

Austin Breweries Map

[vessel-campaign id=”23″]

“East on Sixth Street,” reads the Hops & Grain website, “when it ends you’re there.” Open seven days a week, sample some award winning drafts from this sustainable brewery. Constantly evolving, beers like the Green House IPA are made with different hops every month, so that you’re not always drinking the same beer. The taproom is humans-only, but the patio outside is a perfect place for a pour and a pup, and make sure to grab a bag of Brew Biscuits to go, made from malted grains left over from the brewing process. Take the tour, where you might get to try something not yet available even in the taproom.

Recommended beer to try: The One They Call Zoe, an American pale lager.

For a truly unique brewery experience, check out the other taproom on East Sixth, Zilker Brewing Co. Every aspect of the brewing process is on display for visitors to Zilker, as they sit at a custom, handcrafted bar in the center of the room. Zilker became an East Side hotspot almost as soon as it opened, its beautiful can art is now iconic. You’ll recognize the look of the Marco IPA right away. There’s great people watching here if you sit out on the patio in front of the store.

Recommended beer to try: Coffee Milk Stout, a coffee milk stout.

The canned beer revolution in Austin seems to have started at Austin Beerworks. Now, it seems like every local beer comes canned-only, but in May of 2011, these curious white, blue, brown, and green cans starting cropping up all over Central Texas. Take a trip to the tap room, where you can sample from ABW’s “core four,” though I recommend tasting something from their “exclusives” list, which is where the brewery gets really experimental. Right now, ABW is pouring an IPA made with blood oranges, for example. There’s also a rotating schedule of offerings from some of Austin’s tastiest food trucks, like Evil Weiner and Texas Chili Queens.

Recommended beer to try: Heavy Machinery, a double IPA.

If you’re willing to go for a bit of a drive, it’s imperative you make it out to Jester King Brewery, a farmhouse brewery on a huge plot that is family (and dog!) friendly. Featuring some truly unique sour beers, farmhouse ales, and imperial stouts, Jester King is a different experience than the others on this list, but no less important. Also of note: you can purchase to-go bottles of Jester King’s own suds, or from a remarkable list of beers that the brewery distributes. As a bonus, Stanley’s Farmhouse Pizza is located on the property, featuring delicious pizza and pints of some of the best non-Jester King beers available in Texas, like Lone Pint’s incomparable Yellow Rose IPA.

Recommended beer to try: Atrial Rubicite, a barrel-aged sour.

St. Elmo was founded by two guys who espouse the belief that, “every style of beer has its special place in life.” They drive this home again and again and it’s the philosophy behind this brewery that opened in 2016 and is named after the street it sits on in East Austin. Seriously, they like ALL THE BEER. This bar, beer hall, and beer garden is open six days a week and has a super delish resident food truck called Soursop that serves up Asian drinking food.

Recommended beer to try: Wendy, a summer ale.

Pinthouse Pizza (and craft brewpub!) has two locations in Austin, one on Lamar and one on Burnet. They’ve got a long list of mainstay and seasonal options you need to drink. The operation focuses on quality ingredients and sustainable business practices, which makes them an ideal fit for this city. And it doesn’t hurt that the beer chases down the cheesy goodness of their artisan-style pizza menu beautifully. Order a “Cannonball” pie and you’ll be so happy. Their website even has a live feed of the tap menu at both locations so you don’t have to get off the couch until your beer is calling.

Recommended beer to try: Old Beluga, an amber ale.

Last, but certainly not least, we have the ABGB (which stands for Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co., but no one calls it that). This place has become a fixture of good times and good atmosphere on Oltorf down south. We’re so glad this brewery/restaurant/temple of fun was brought into the world five years ago. It’s been an awesome local addition. The owners believe, “beer has the power to make everything better” and we heartily agree. It’s kind of why we went to the trouble of putting this list together! In addition to great beer, they have a full menu with great pizzas and lots of live music.

Recommended beer to try: Rocket 100, a pre-prohibition-style pilsner.
