Lots of Austinites know and love El Cosmico in Marfa, TX. It’s a destination in far West Texas where guests can stay in refurbished airstream trailers and even yurts while getting  a hefty dose of the quirky and artistic region near Big Bend.

Now, the hospitality magnate who started it all, Liz Lambert, is reimagining, rebuilding, and expanding the campground hotel to 62 acres that will feature large-scale 3D-printed domes, arches, vaults, and parabolic forms. The new and improved El Cosmico will have guest units, a pool, spa, and shared communal facilities. The project is set to break ground in 2024.

“I have had a vision for the evolution of El Cosmico for many years that includes several spaces that add to the experience both for guests and locals—a pool, a hammam, and more space for art and skills-building workshops,” Lambert said in a press release.

“Our collaboration with El Cosmico and ICON has allowed us to pursue the formal and material possibilities of cutting-edge 3D-printed construction untethered by the traditional limitations of a conventional site or client,” said Bjarke Ingels, Founder & Creative Director, BIG.

The collection of the BIG-designed two, three, and four-bedroom homes feature expansive views of the Davis Mountains and range from 1,200 sq. ft to 2,200 sq. ft. Reservations will begin in Summer 2023.

Being in Central Texas, Austin has some of the most beautiful views of the Hill Country and lots to discover in just under a 2-hour drive.

West

Driftwood

One of the easiest drives, and one of our favorite places to visit is Driftwood. Home to the famous Salt Lick BBQ Restaurant and Wine Cellars, there is plenty to do in a short day trip, or longer weekend getaway. Just 24 miles Southwest of Austin, Driftwood is home to many wineries and has beautiful views of the Texas Hill Country.

Our perfect Driftwood day would include starting out at the Salt Lick Cellars Winery getting a vineyard tour, followed by spending the day in a Private Cabana in the Star Garden, experiencing private wine tastings, followed by an afternoon on the shaded deck overlooking the vineyard.

After a day at the winery and purchasing a few of our favorite bottles we enjoyed, we would go over to the Salt Lick BYOB Restaurant for a night of great barbecue with friends. The Salt Lick is one of Texas’ most iconic restaurants nestled in a rustic setting in the Texas Hill Country. With legendary, pit-smoked barbecue available by the plate or “Family Style” (all you can eat), this is a favorite to Austinites and Texans alike.

For more information on Salt Lick, check out our full article here.

This past Thursday I hopped in my car around 7:30 a.m., picked up breakfast tacos and a friend, and arrived at the Austin Executive Airport at 8 a.m. I parked my car about 100 yards from the plane, downed a quick, complimentary espresso, and was in the air by 8:30. To say this was the most pleasurable airport experience I’ve had would be a massive understatement.

Taos Air
Taos Air

Once onboard the 30-ish passenger plane, my very lucky friend and I were treated to complimentary cocktails and an array of snacks that blow the traditional airline pretzels out of the sky. In just under two hours, we were on the ground in Taos. A complimentary (are you sensing a theme here?) shuttle transported us up to the ski valley, and we were on the slopes by noon!

This sort of treatment is typically reserved for a Kardashian, but with Taos Air, your airfare, bags, shuttles, parking, and all other luxuries are included for a reasonable price of around $400 round trip. For more about the Taos Air experience, check out this article we published in 2018.

The Blake at Taos Ski Valley
The Blake at Taos Ski Valley

Taos Ski Valley boasts a world-class ski mountain with a charming small-town feel. It’s also worth noting it’s the world’s first and only B Corp ski resort. We stayed at The Blake this time around, which is conveniently located right in the middle of the main village. The award-winning hotel offers all the amenities of a typical ski resort, but we were especially impressed with the convenience of the “ski-valet.” The friendly staff greeted us each morning with warm boots and the rest of our gear ready to go.

For dining in the valley, we really enjoyed breakfast at Cafe Naranja, and hanging with the locals at Tim’s Stray Dog Cantina in the evenings. I also highly recommend The Bavarian, which is a ski in, ski out restaurant on the mountain that offers authentic German food and drink.

Taos Air Bavarian
The Bavarian Restaurant

Like all vacations, this one was too short, but now with Taos Air, I can book a trip the next time I see snow in the forecast for New Mexico. I’ve also heard rumors they’ll be operating flights year-round to and from Austin this year, which means that a summer camping trip may be on the horizon as well.

We recently had the pleasure of a two-night stay at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa on a road-trip from Denver to Austin. While 48 hours isn’t nearly enough time to take in all that the resort has to offer, here are some of aspects we enjoyed the most.

Scenic Beauty

The resort is located on a Native American Pueblo, roughly 20 miles north of Albuquerque, NM. The natural beauty of the desert and the Sandia Mountains provided stunning sunset views from our patio, and everywhere we wandered around the resort. There are several hiking trails throughout the property that are beautiful and shaded throughout the day.

Pet Friendly

Saying that the resort is pet-friendly doesn’t do it justice. Upon arrival we were given a gift basket for our pup complete with treats, a Tamaya bandana, and more. Our guest room had bowls set out for food and water, and there was a large dog bed that got plenty of use as well.

The aforementioned trails were also perfect for early morning, and sunset dog walks.

Golf Course

We’re admittedly huge fans of the game of golf, and Twin Warriors, the on-property golf course was breathtaking and challenging. If you enjoy the sport, this course is worth making the trip on its own.

Other Activities

Srai Wi means “our children” in the Keresan language which is spoken by the Native Americans who live on the Pueblo. Fittingly, the resort offers many family-friendly activities inspired by the local culture. Traditional bread baking, jewelry and pottery making classes are a just a few of the offerings, and we also enjoyed more traditional resort activities including the beautiful pool area, complete with waterslide, and smore making in the evening over an open fire pit.

The Spa

Tamaya Mist is the onsite spa at the resort, and it offers a wide variety of specialty treatments. We opted for deep tissue massages, which I highly recommend, but also be sure to arrive early; throw on one of the luxurious robes and enjoy the steam room and hot tub beforehand.

Dining

The culinary highlight of the trip was dinner at the award-winning Corn Maiden, Tamaya’s fine dining option, but we were also thoroughly impressed with the menu at the more casual Santa Ana Café. We ate there for several meals and were always happy with our experiences. Definitely try the enchiladas!

Overall, we had a great time and will definitely be visiting again before long. Southwest offers affordable non-stop flights daily (golf clubs fly free!) to and from Albuquerque, making this an easy getaway for Austinites.

If you love to ski (or just après ski and drink hot toddies all day), this is a pretty exciting development—Taos, New Mexico wants you to come visit so badly that they’ve started their own nonstop airline from Austin and Dallas.

This is not some crappy bargain airline that charges you for breathing and using the bathroom on the plane, it’s a high-style charter jet for a super reasonable price! Tickets start at just $400 roundtrip and the airline will be making trips from December through March.

Taos Air is being touted as the fastest and easiest route to the Rockies. There are no baggage fees for up to two bags, free changes if you make them at least 24-hours in advance, and late check-in up to 30 minutes before time of departure. It’s like going back in time to when air travel was civilized and enjoyable! This is a public charter, and that also means no TSA checkpoints.

You can book your flight by clicking here or calling 833-359-8267.

The charter is getting a lot of buzz, so you might want to plan that ski trip before they sell out for the season. That beautiful powder is calling your name. We love Austin, but this is worth skipping town for.
