Has the warmer weather made you start dreaming about getting out of town for a while? One of our favorite quick escapes from Austin is the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa. The resort, superbly situated on 600 pristine acres of rolling hills and tree-lined vistas, offers grand views of the wide-open Texas Hill Country. It also has endless options for summer entertainment for guests of all ages.

The luxurious JW Marriott San Antonio features 1,002 newly refreshed guest rooms, a world-class spa, a 36-hole PGA TOUR golf facility, seven restaurant and lounge options, hiking and biking trails, a sports court, a Topgolf Swing Suite with a variety of virtual games for all ages, daily summer recreational activities, and more than 265,000 square feet of meeting and event space, making it one of the largest JW Marriott resorts in the world.

Swim, Float, and Cabana All Day

We love the Resort’s 9-acre River Bluff Water Experience where you can float along the 1,100-foot lazy river, ascend the 35-foot tall Water Tower to experience the two 275-foot-long tube slides, or try the 60-foot tall body slides that soar above the Hill Country at speeds up to 20 miles-per-hour. There are pools aplenty including a sand beach-entry pool, an activity swimming pool, a kid’s pool, and an adult pool. Private poolside cabanas are also available where you can enjoy shaded lounge seating and a private server.

Wine and Dine

The Resort features eight dining outlets which include Cibolo Moon, serving creative Mexican cuisine among a diverse tequila selection; 18 Oaks, the resort’s upscale steakhouse; High Velocity, the expansive sports bar and restaurant with a 120-foot-long HD video wall and a Topgolf Swing Suite; Crooked Branch, the acclaimed lobby bar and restaurant serving Asian inspired tapas dishes with a Texas twist; Rivertop Grill, an outdoor restaurant within River Bluff Water Experience; Replenish Spa Bistro, a relaxed restaurant with health-conscious dishes within Lantana Spa; the resort’s food trailer, Nourish; and an on-site Starbucks.

And this summer, they are adding FIAMME Pizzeria, a new dining outlet offering an elevated pizza experience. FIAMME, which means “flames” in Italian, will serve Neapolitan pizza and accompaniments such as appetizers, salads, desserts, unique cocktails, and the resort’s signature Hill Country Honey Blonde Beer.

Keep the Kids Busy and Entertained

Daily programmed summer recreational activities offer big fun for kids and families. Revel in the Zoomagination Wild Animal Experience, photos with a real-life longhorn, Build-A-Bear Workshop, nightly S’mores by the outdoor fire pit, outdoor movies at the pool, water balloon toss, finger painting party, face painting, balloon artist, family bingo, cookie decorating, and more.

Glamp in the Great Indoors

Try the “Glamp in the Great Indoors” package, which includes accommodations in a luxury suite designed to emulate an outdoor camp under the big starry night sky of Texas. This suite is a comfortable upgrade to the great outdoors and an indoor tent sleeps two to three people. It’s also outfitted with a cozy blanket, a longhorn stuffed animal, and sleeping bags for young glampers to take home. The Glamping Suite includes a connecting king or double queen room and features over 1,400 square feet of space, a dining table for eight people, and a small kitchenette. The package is available for stays at the resort, and can be booked online using the promotional code ARN.

Master the Sport of Golf

Golf enthusiasts can master the sport with the 36-hole PGA TOUR golf facility, TPC San Antonio, located within the resort and featuring two golf courses exclusive to resort guests and members. Both courses have played host to PGA TOUR events with The Oaks course serving as the host venue of the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open since 2010. Super Twilight golf is available for resort guests after 3pm (4 p.m. starting in May) and offers special pricing of $135 plus tax per player.

Treat Yourself at the Spa

Everyone deserves to be pampered during vacation. Drawing upon the vibrant spirit and traditions that have defined the Texas Hill Country for centuries, the award-winning Lantana Spa offers personalized treatments with natural elements offering a holistic approach to revive the mind, body, and spirit.

Explore the Region

The Texas Hill Country is a beloved destination for explorers, historians, oenophiles, foodies, and adventurers. Local vineyards, wildflower fields, fruit orchards, quaint towns, and numerous state parks make the region a perfect vacation spot. Texas ranks as the 5th largest wine-producing state in the U.S., and there are over 100 wineries in the Texas Hill Country with stunning settings to explore. Other unique Texas Hill Country attractions include Natural Bridge Caverns, Texas’ largest known caverns; Six Flags Fiesta Texas; Jacob’s Well, a swimming hole in a submerged cave; and SeaWorld.

Being in Central Texas, Austin has some of the most beautiful views of the Hill Country and lots to discover in just under a 2-hour drive.

West

Driftwood

One of the easiest drives, and one of our favorite places to visit is Driftwood. Home to the famous Salt Lick BBQ Restaurant and Wine Cellars, there is plenty to do in a short day trip, or longer weekend getaway. Just 24 miles Southwest of Austin, Driftwood is home to many wineries and has beautiful views of the Texas Hill Country.

Our perfect Driftwood day would include starting out at the Salt Lick Cellars Winery getting a vineyard tour, followed by spending the day in a Private Cabana in the Star Garden, experiencing private wine tastings, followed by an afternoon on the shaded deck overlooking the vineyard.

After a day at the winery and purchasing a few of our favorite bottles we enjoyed, we would go over to the Salt Lick BYOB Restaurant for a night of great barbecue with friends. The Salt Lick is one of Texas’ most iconic restaurants nestled in a rustic setting in the Texas Hill Country. With legendary, pit-smoked barbecue available by the plate or “Family Style” (all you can eat), this is a favorite to Austinites and Texans alike.

For more information on Salt Lick, check out our full article here.

W Austin stands in downtown, next to the world-famous Austin City Limits. Encounter over 250 bars, restaurants, theaters, and concert venues when you explore the area around this luxury hotel. Like you, we thrive on creativity and uniqueness. The hotel’s restaurants are distinct entities, from Trace Restaurant, offering an innovative menu with locally sourced ingredients, to the Living Room, which features four eclectic areas that provide very different and special experiences. South Congress

Hotel Saint Cecilia

Created in honor of the patron saint of music and poetry, the Saint Cecilia takes inspiration from the great era of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s when a revolution of rock and roll and beat poetry overran the hallowed halls of established convention. Each of the five suites, six poolside bungalows, and three studios embodies an equal love for the elegance of old-world luxury and the irreverence of their muses—The Stones, Bill Burroughs, Anne Sexton, Hunter S. Thompson among them. The secluded property and lush grounds are open only to hotel guests, thereby offering a unique sense of privacy situated steps away from the heart of South Austin.

Saint Cecilia’s crowning jewel is its 50-foot heated lap pool which is open to guests twenty-four hours a day. The Saint Cecilia also offers seated poolside dining under the arbor for breakfast and light fare. Located above the lounge, the covered terrace is perfect for an intimate meal, cocktail party or business meeting of 6 to 20 guests. This space offers a city view and overlooks The Saint Cecilia’s stunning grounds.

Hotel Saint Cecilia

Hotel Magdalena is a new hotel project from Austin’s acclaimed Bunkhouse in collaboration with renowned architecture firm Lake | Flato, opening in fall 2020 on Music Lane in the popular South Congress neighborhood of Austin. At 89 rooms, it is Bunkhouse’s largest hotel to date, and features four new, but distinct, buildings connected by exposed elevated walkways and courtyards, creating a treehouse feel inside the grounds. The property sits at varying elevations, an homage to the slopes of Barton Springs, and the lush grounds are planted with native Texas species including Bigtooth Maples, Redbuds, Meyer Lemon Trees, Yaupon Holly, and Little Gem Magnolia.

How to Have the Perfect Austin Bachelorette Party

Concierge Services

If planning all the details of a trip isn’t your thing, try using a Concierge Service. They can plan your whole weekend and take all of the stress off of the bride, MOH, and bridal party’s plate.

Parts of Town

When visiting any new city, understanding the different parts of town is key to knowing where you want to stay, where to go, where to eat, and what best fits your tribe’s ~vibe~. In general, Downtown, East Side Downtown, South Congress, and Lake Austin or Lake Travis are super popular with groups.

Hotels

Once you understand what part of town you want to be in, look into hotels. Here you can find our favorite hotels sorted by location.

Vacation Rentals

If you prefer a big house for your crew, check out our favorite vacation rental homes here.

Activities

Now into the details! Outside of just eating and drinking, you typically want to try to find some type of activity. Depending on the time of year, you can see which activities we recommend by the season. Austin truly has some of the best things to do so be sure to try to hit at least one of these during your visit.

Restaurants

Our favorite topic—food. You’ll find a list here of our favorite restaurants for large groups sorted by area of town. We include the best spots that take reservations so you won’t find yourself stuck with a large group of hangry women and a long wait.

Bars

A bachelorette party wouldn’t be complete without one the booze. We sorted our favorite bars in the city by area, depending on where you’re staying or what part you want to visit each day.

Day Trips

Being in the center of a large state like Texas, there are also so many towns near Austin that are great for day trips. Check out some are ideas, which are also great for local brides who want to do something close to home and on a budget!

Transportation

Be sure to ride in style no matter where you’re going! Whether it be a limo picking you up from the airport, or a cute party bus to take you on a day trip or out to the Lake. Always be sure to utilize all of the transportation services Austin has to offer—especially on a weekend that is likely to have heavy drinking involved!

Workout Classes

Of course Austin is one of the healthiest cities in the nation, so a vacation here wouldn’t be complete without some type of workout. There are a ton of fun group exercise classes that can be a blast for a bachelorette party. You will certainly earn all of the eating and drinking during weekend!

Spa

For those looking for a more relaxing weekend, Austin still has you covered. Check out some of our favorite spas (one even offering a Water Taxi Ride service on Lady Bird Lake!).

Grocery Delivery

Not a super sexy topic—but a necessary one. This is an optional add-on but we always think it is a great idea to do grocery delivery to wherever you’re staying. No one wants to land from the airport, Uber to a grocery store and try to shop for the weekend with 10 women. No one wants that. Make it easy—build your cart beforehand with snacks, drink mixers, and drunk food (#frozenpizza) and have it delivered to your doorstep. You will be so happy you did.

Pro Tip: Have your booze delivered too with Drizly.

The beauty of living in Austin is that you don’t have to go far to feel worlds away. One of our favorite escapes is  Hyatt Regency Lost Pines & Spa, a gorgeous 405-acre property on the banks of the Lower Colorado River between Austin and Bastrop. It’s just a 20-minute drive to paradise!

And now the resort is embracing the “staycation” trend and offering a ton of—and we mean like endless—activities to entice families to bail on city life for a few days give ourselves a much-deserved break. They’ve just announced its lineup that offers everything from outdoor survival skill classes, moonlight stand-up paddle board tours of Lake Bastrop, and special rates for horseback rides!

Younger guests can also take part in the “Pony Trail Ride Adventure,” an abbreviated trail ride experience where children learn about horses while being led side-by-side by an experienced handler. Trail rides are $85 per person, and the “Pony Trail Ride Adventure” costs $45.

Led by a naturalist with the LCRA, the one-hour survival class will teach children the basics of outdoor survival skills including fire building, water filtration, shelter building, edible plants and insects, cordage and knot tying, as well as wilderness first aid. The organization will also feature “Extreme Teen Challenges” where teenage guests and their parents can take part in some of the LCRA’s most daring activities including zip lining at Zip Lost Pines, rock climbing, and gladiator challenges.

A new moonlight stand up paddle board tour of the nearby Lake Bastrop is an amazing experience. As the resort is directly connect to the Colorado River, guests can take the “Kayak the Colorado” excursion in which they are led by a guide who discusses the local scenery, wildlife, and foliage of the area, or enjoy the “Sunset Raft Trip” tour which takes place at dusk when local animals are most likely to be seen in their natural habitat.

Additionally, the resort will provide a jam-packed itinerary of family-friendly spring break activities including tractor-drawn hay rides, family movie nights, magic shows, an inflatable bounce house, glow-in-the-dark putt-putt and glow dance parties, nightly s’mores by the firepit, and scavenger hunts, as well as arts and crafts sessions with everything from slime making to tie-dying shirts. It’s camp for everyone! Families can also take part in friendly competition with lawn bowling tournaments, volleyball and soccer games, as well as several giant yard games including Jenga, Connect 4, chess, and more.

Kids and their parents will also get a chance to meet the resort’s mascots, including two Texas longhorns, an American mustang, miniature horses, and alpacas.

As always, guests can relax at the on-site Crooked River Water Park. The water park features an activity pool with a sandy beach for building sand castles, a 1,000-foot lazy river, and two-story water slide. It also includes a splash pad for children and an adults-only section with a relaxing pool and whirlpool.

The resort also provides Camp Hyatt, a kid-friendly program that introduces young travelers to the Lone Star State. While children are enjoying a fun-filled time with arts and crafts, games, and sports, parents can enjoy a round-of golf at Wolfdancer Golf Club or escape to total relaxation with customized treatments at the on-site Spa Django.

Austin is often heralded as a place where it’s easy to maintain a well-balanced lifestyle. There are citywide opportunities for indulging, festing, finding our zen, or even finding your brand. You can run the trails around Town Lake and blaze trails in your career! But even Austinites need a respite from the inevitable strains of life, like constant communication, mounting stress, and demanding schedules.

So listen up, all you overworked entrepreneurs, you hustling-and-bustling and carpooling parents, and anyone out there who is simply in need of a little getaway: I’ve found a 19-acre waterfront remedy for all of life’s craziness. Say hello to Lake Austin Spa.

lake austin spa

Among their many accolades, Lake Austin Spa was recognized in Travel + Leisure magazine’s 2016 World’s Best Awards as a Top 10 Destination Spa in the U.S. And this “destination spa”, fellow Austinites, is a whopping 40 minutes from downtown.

So if you take one bit of advice from me in this year’s 365 things to do, let it be this: Relax, rejuvenate, and recharge at Lake Austin Spa. (Fear not, internet addicts. You don’t have to go totally off the grid. They have perfectly functioning Wifi.) If you can’t commit to a heavenly overnight experience, wet your appetite with a “daycation” at this little slice of heaven in the Hill Country. Here are just a few reasons you should go.

lake austin spa

  • The Design – From magazine photo worthy interior design to top-notch service, it is the most welcoming environment you could imagine—luxurious retreat meets rustic lake house. You almost feel as if you’re staying at a friend’s (really nice) place. It’s homey, cozy, and relaxing. There’s nothing hoity-toity about it.
  • *The Cabanas – They have 40 cabanas (some lakefront and others overlooking the garden) so even at capacity, there is a max of 72 guests. Let’s talk specifics of the rooms. Easily one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. The pillows + mattress + comforter combo make you want to spend all day in bed. Hey, to each his own when it comes to how you want to spend your vacation! Their rooms feature their in-house line of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and body wash – all a divinely lavender concoction that make you want to spend all day in the shower.

lake Austin spa pool barn

  • Pool Barn – There has never been a barn that I have loved more. Their pool barn is in a class of its own. The picture says it all. Perfect for swimming laps or avoiding the Texas sun.

lake austin spa blue room

  • The Blue Room – There is definitely no feeling blue in this room. After wrapping yourself up in a signature spa robe, you will be directed to this room to spend a little time sipping flavored water or herbal tea before and after your treatments. After taking in the elegance of this space, perfectly decorated in all shades of blue, you are guaranteed to achieve new levels tranquility.
  • Friendship Table –Are you solo on this staycation? No problem. They have a “friendship table” in their dining areas where those who want to be social and meet new people can dine. It’s a special touch that warmed my heart.

lake austin spa dock

  • *Lake Swimming- This was perhaps one of my favorite experiences while at the spa. In the afternoon of our second full day, after we had entirely enjoyed the spa’s many pools, we grabbed our most faithful companion (a bottle of champagne), a couple of floats and took to the lake for a change of scenery. We were happily sipping while submerged. It was a real highlight and pure bliss.
  • *Yogurt Button- There is a button overnight guests may press anytime to receive immediate frozen yogurt. They offer two flavors daily, and while the button is reserved for overnight guests, day visitors are still eligible for yogurt-on-demand; they just have to order it the old-fashioned way… by voicing their request to a staff member.

lake austin spa

  • *Garden Room- As I mentioned before, the interior design is superb. This particular room is cozy, quaint, and the absolute perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee with a good book.

lake austin spa outdoor shower

  • Outdoor Showers- After enjoying one (or more) of the hundreds of spa treatments to choose from, all guests are welcome to enjoy all of the amenities of the 25,000-square-foot spa. That list of amenities, just to name a few, includes a hot tub, steam room, and a glorious offering that should not be overlooked: the outdoor showers.

Lake austin spa cabana pool

  • Cabana Style Pool- This is the resort style pool that is situated at the spa, but from now on, I’m going to call it a lagoon. The vegetation around this lagoon is intoxicating to the senses. There are plenty of cabanas and day beds to lounge around on in the lagoon. The lagoon offers areas of sun and areas of shade. You can eat and drink at the lagoon. You can meander back and forth from the lagoon’s crisply cool pool or steamy hot tub. This lagoon will have you feeling very far away from Austin.

Lake Austin Spa garden

  • *Garden-There is a beautiful garden to stroll through where you can get herbs to add to your tea or drinking water. You can even pick fresh flowers for your room if you so desire!

lake austin

  • *Boat Ride- One of the daily activities you can participate in is a boat ride. Lasting about an hour, we cruised the lake, took in the sights, and stopped for a dip in the water to cool off. Highly recommend it!
  • *Classes- They offer countless classes for all interests and skill levels. I’m talking anything from Bollywood dancing to hoola hooping, from boot camp to guided meditation, from cooking classes to card making. They have truly thought of it all when it comes to spa activities.
  • The Service- From the moment we arrived, the service was a ten. After spending a few days there, you start to see the same faces. There is something to be said for the familiarity of knowing and being known. In no time at all, we were on a first name basis with the staff who excelled in accommodating our every need. Prepare yourself for some serious pampering.

lake austin spa lake pool

  • *The Lake Pool- It’s a pool on the shore of Lake Austin. In any direction you look, you will be met with the lake and all of its lush, green surroundings or the meticulously cared for grounds of the resort or the smile of a friendly worker who will happily pour you and your fellow staycationer(s) another bottle of champagne.

lake austin spa hydro bike

  • *Activities/Workout Room- This is your staycation so you can participate in as many or as little activities as your schedule or desire allows. They do have a beautiful workout room overlooking the lake, though. So if you want to take some time on the treadmill, it will be a session with one seriously gorgeous view. Our workout of choice? We took to the hydro bikes and peddled up and down the lake! Stand up paddle boards are also readily available for another on lake activity.

lake austin spa view

  • Science- If I haven’t said enough to convince you to find time to experience Lake Austin Spa for yourself, don’t trust me. Trust science. Research has shown that simply standing next to a moving body of water has real health benefits. The movement creates negative ions in the air, which our body absorbs and those negative ions help alleviate depression, anxiety and create a sense of euphoria. And in case you didn’t know, Lake Austin is an extension of the Texas Colorado River, a moving body of water. So even laying on one of their hammocks by the lake shore will do the trick in giving you the mood boost that you need!

The * designates event items that are exclusive to overnight guests.
