Free Ways to Get Active Around Austin

When margaritas cost $20 these days, you have to cut costs where you can. We’ve rounded up ways to stay active in Austin without breaking the bank (and all while getting to know your city even better).

    Explore Lady Bird Lake

One of the most popular hiking trails around the lake is the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. The ten-mile trail will take you around the entirety of the lake. Don’t worry it’s mostly flat and made of crushed granite, perfect for running, walking, or biking.

If the ten-mile trail is more than you’re looking for, check out the Lady Bird Boardwalk. This is a one-mile-long stretch where you can soak in the view of the Austin skyline right down the center of the lake. Keep in mind, that there is not any shade on this path, so it is best to visit in the morning or evening.

Swim Laps at Big Stacy Pool

Tucked away in the Travis Heights neighborhood is Big Stacy Pool. This hidden gem stays naturally heated to about 80 degrees year-round, ideal for winter swimming. The six-lane pool is open every day except Mondays & Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and when the temperature outside is below freezing.

Get Jacked on Butler Shores Exercise Equipment

Maybe you don’t want to get trapped in a gym membership or maybe you just prefer working out in the sunshine, either way check out the exercise equipment at Butler Shores. The exercise equipment focuses on bodyweight and calisthenics training. With more 100 potential exercise combinations, it caters to all levels and abilities. Visitors can take advantage of the full-body workout stations for a wide range of strength and conditioning routines. Expect to find pull-up bars, climbing ropes, and suspension trainers for comprehensive waterfront cross-training.

    Join a Run Club

Looking to get active and build a sense of community? Austin is jam packed with run clubs to join. While some are paid, there is an extensive list you can join for free. Check out our full Run Club Guide here.

Rally at a Free Pickleball Court

As long as you have a paddles, there are plenty of places around town where you can find a court to play for free. Some even have paddles you can rent for under $5. We have a full list of where to play pickle here but Austin Parks and Recreation Pickleball Courts has a large selection of free courts to choose from.
