Whether it’s raining or 100 degrees, a museum is always a good idea when you need to get indoors. Austin may not have quite as many museums as Houston has, but there is still something to see and learn at each one. Here are eight museums to visit in Austin.

The Blanton Museum of Art

Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin at Blanton

UT’s art museum is one of the largest university art museums in the world, with a huge space dedicated to its permanent collection, including Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin, and a rotation of exhibits. The Blanton also recently underwent huge updates to its grounds, which are worth a look.

Hours: Tuesday–Friday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Cost: $15 for adults, $8 for children, free for UT ID holders; free admission for all on Tuesdays

LBJ Presidential Library

LBJ Presidential Library

The LBJ Presidential Library is one of 15 presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. It is dedicated to the life and presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson, as well as his wife, the beloved Lady Bird Johnson. See recreations of the Oval Office and Lady Bird’s office, the presidential limousine, and an exhibit dedicated to President John F. Kennedy’s assassination when LBJ suddenly took office.

Hours: Monday–Sunday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Cost: $12 for adults, $4 for children 13–18, free for UT ID holders or if your first, middle, or last name is Lyndon

Harry Ransom Center

Harry Ransom Center

The Ransom Center is a renowned humanities research center on UT’s campus, where several incredible artifacts have passed through or now call the Center home. The collection includes Robert DeNiro’s personal archive, Jack Kerouac’s notebook he kept while writing On the Road, original works by Frida Kahlo, and a complete Gutenberg Bible (one of only 20 in the world). Exhibits rotate throughout the year.

Hours: Tuesday–Friday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Saturday–Sunday, noon–5 p.m.

Cost: Free

Thinkery

For curious kids, head to the Thinkery, a children’s museum where anyone can participate in hands-on play and learning both indoors and outdoors. Need a summer activity for the kids? Thinkery offers camps for children in pre-K to fifth grade.

Hours: Tuesday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.; Friday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Cost: $14 for those aged 2 and up; free during community hours on Tuesdays and Sundays

Mexic-Arte Museum

Located in downtown Austin, the Mexic-Arte Museum was founded in 1984 by artists Sylvia Orozco, Sam Coronado, and Pio Pulido to showcase and create a space for traditional and contemporary Mexican, Latino, and Latin American art and culture. For example, an exhibit beginning in September celebrates Día de los Muertos with ofrendas and works by Jose Guadalupe Posada and more.

Hours: Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sunday, 12–5 p.m.

Cost: $7 for adults, $4 for students, $1 for children 12 and under

Bullock Texas State History Museum

Nearly 500,000 people visit the Bullock Museum each year to learn the story of Texas, which covers the Lone Star State’s history from thousands of years before it was even a state through the 21st century.

Hours: Monday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Cost: $15 for adults, $9 for children ages 4-17, students and seniors, kids 3 and under free

The Contemporary

The Contemporary

With two locations, the Contemporary highlights modern and contemporary art. The Jones Center downtown includes an indoor space for rotating exhibitions and a rooftop area, while Laguna Gloria operates on the museum’s original home on the Clara Driscoll estate and showcases contemporary sculpture and art installations on 14 acres.

Hours: Check website for Jones Center and Laguna Gloria

Cost: $10 for adults, free for children 18 and under; free on Thursdays for all at both locations

The Elisabet Ney Museum

The Elisabet Ney Museum is the historic home and studio of German sculptor Elisabet Ney, who moved to Austin in 1882. The museum exhibits Ney’s work from the 1850s through her death in 1907, as well as other contemporary artists.

Hours: Wednesday–Sunday, noon.–5 p.m.

Girls Empowerment Network’s latest Unstoppable Activist Spark Kit is here to inspire tween and teen girls to effectively and confidently engage in their community. Now in its 25th year, Girls Empowerment Network’s mission is to increase girls’ self-efficacy and ignite the power in girls by teaching them the skills to thrive and believe in their abilities to become unstoppable.

For the Unstoppable Activist Spark Kit, girl experts created more than two dozen fun activities that help girls identify and live out their values to make the world a better place. The all-in-one girl power activity boxes also connect girls to girl experts and peers, creating community that many girls have been missing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

All of the activities will help them find their voice so they can confidently advocate for themselves and their communities for change. The Spark Kits also connect girls to girl experts and peers on weekly calls (now available in English and Spanish) and virtual workshops. It also includes an invitation to Spark Change Day on May 15, a virtual training for youth on the power of advocacy, a review of the legislative process, interactive exploration of issues which impact girls in our nation and the opportunity to hear from local and national policymakers.

What’s Inside?

The Unstoppable Activist Spark Kit features a colorful journal and all the supplies for 25 hands-on activities that show girls how to identify social causes that are meaningful to them, how to effectively advocate for an issue, how to practice authentic self-care, and how to use their voice for a more equitable and just world.

A sample of activities include:

 • Tree of Life Drawing their “Tree of Life,” girls reflect on how their experiences shape the activist they want to become.
 • The 5 Whys – Girls question their “why” to discover why an issue is true, why it is happening and why it is important for them.
 • S.M.A.R.T. Demands – Activating their critical thinking skills, girls learn how to be a powerful advocate for the changes they want to see in the world.
 • How a Bill Becomes Law – Girls imagine themselves as a Texas legislator and confidently write about a bill they would like to have passed.
 • Radical Rest and Relaxation Girls create a relaxing rice and lavender sachet, using aromatherapy as a coping skill and learn the importance of self-care.

The activities are self-led and come with virtual check-ins with girl experts via phone, text, or video call. Girls may also access upcoming virtual workshops and events, and this Spark Kit will be available through the end of May 2021.

For the first time, a translated UNSTOPPABLE ACTIVIST Spark Kit journal will be available digitally in Spanish along with girl expert, Spanish-facilitated groups.

Spark Kits are so much fun girls will never know it’s designed to teach them skills that improve their mental health and make them feel more confident.

How Do I Get One?

Unstoppable Activist Spark Kits are available to order online

Valued at $500 each, the kits are made possible with the support of donors and sponsors, making the cost to families and schools only $35 plus tax, with shipping calculated at checkout. Spark Kits can be mailed anywhere in the United States.

Spark Kits can also be hand-delivered via a “Spirit Squad” within a 30–mile radius of its Austin and Houston offices during weeks designated on the website. Deluxe Spark Kits are $50 and include fast shipping plus a limited–edition Girls Empowerment Network t-shirt and water bottle while supplies last.

Additional Opportunities include sponsoring a Spark Kit, as well as Girls Empowerment Network virtual volunteer opportunities, such as writing relatable role model letters to girls.

]]>
Considering my budget for groceries has grossly expanded, along with my waistline, during this Coronavirus lockdown, I thought it may be a good idea to get the kids in the kitchen to help prepare meals for the family. My daughter has taken baking classes in the past, and now that she’s a teenager, she’s a budding chef who is comfortable in the kitchen. My eight-year-old likes to help in the kitchen as well, but he hasn’t had any “formal” training or classes like his big sister, so I thought a virtual cooking class would be excellent for him to expand on his cooking and baking abilities.

Many of the virtual classes listed below are from local companies in the Austin area, but I’ve also listed some national options as well.

Bake Austin

Join local chef Pascal’s private Facebook book group for live and pre-recorded baking and cooking lessons, happening Monday through Friday for kids of all ages.

Cook, Learn, Grow

Kids can learn to make everything from mini quiches to Texas beef and rice salad in this online live series. Classes are $10 per session and include a grocery list that will be sent to you via email once you’ve registered.

Make It Sweet

Follow along on their Facebook page for demos teaching you how to make everything from pizza to pretzels, cool cupcakes, and more.

Sticky Fingers Cooking Online Classes

Chef Instructors will lead your young chef from their own kitchens providing instruction, feedback, problem-solving and a fun interactive cooking experience. A comprehensive recipe collection, shopping lists, food allergy guide, fun family activities, and video collection is included as well as loads of future family cooking fun at home together! Families can sign up for a series of classes, prorated if you miss one or two, that will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on April 28th.

Chef of the House

Kids can learn how to make things like pretzels and mac and cheese in this free online cooking class. Follow their Facebook page to stay up to date on future classes.

The Seasoned Chef

Offering classes for adults and young chefs, these online cooking classes are $20 and teach baking and cooking skills. All online class registrants will receive an email containing directions on linking to the class through Zoom as well as a shopping list and menu packet ahead of time if kids would like to cook along.

Main Course Cooking School

Virtual cooking classes for the masses…..meant for kids, but everyone is welcome. Every Tuesday and Thursday at 12 p.m., using items that can found in almost every pantry.

Paramount Education, the family and education side of Austin’s Paramount Theatre, is bringing fun videos and posts for kids to Facebook every Wednesday and Friday throughout the month of April as an extension of the Literacy to Life Live Lessons that take place on Mondays at 11:30 a.m. on Facebook Live.

How It Works

Have the kids participate in Literacy to Life Live Lesson on Monday, April 20 & 27 at 11:30 a.m. CST. The Paramount’s professional teaching artists, the Story Wranglers, will educate kids on the foundations of creative writing and writing original stories together.

On Wednesdays, Paramount Education will post a short 3-5 minute video on their Facebook page of one of their team members teaching an activity based on Monday’s original story. These will include crafts, art activities, and tasty culinary creations. Check out last week’s story about a banana scientist who enjoys ice cream with his grandma – featuring Story Wrangler Sarah showing an easy way to make ice cream at home. You can find it at facebook.com/ParamountEDUATX.

On Fridays, Paramount Education will share a musical adaptation of Monday’s original story, featuring different musicians from the community creating their own unique musical interpretation. It began with last week’s adaptation of “Jerry’s Mushroom Adventure” by multi-talented musician Eddie King of Squirrel Nut Zippers.

WHEN: Literacy to Life Live Lessons

Monday, April 20, 2020 | 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. CDT

Monday, April 27, 2020 | 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. CDT

WHERE: Visit the Paramount Education Facebook page at facebook.com/ParamountEDUATX for all posts and videos. You can also find the Literacy to Life Live Lessons at the events page, or go directly to https://www.facebook.com/events/240931827050790/. Be sure to “like” the page to receive notification when the lessons begin.

If you want to live the good life at a resort with your family but just can’t find the time to break away for an overnight stay somewhere, a daycation is just the thing you need. Offering the best of both worlds, a trip for the day to the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort & Spa offers a day of rest, relaxation, family fun, and more while allowing you to return home to sleep peacefully in your own bed!

Set on the banks of the Colorado River on over 400 acres just outside of Bastrop, this family-friendly resort is a short 30-minute drive from most points in the Austin area; close enough to home but just far enough away to escape your day-to-day life.

The day pass includes access to the Crooked River Water park which includes a lazy river, a two-story waterslide, hot tub, splash pad, kiddie pool, a sandy beach area with plenty of seats, and an adult-only pool for patrons who are 17 years and older. The pool is heated in the cooler months, and there is a volleyball net for a friendly game of pool volleyball!

The onsite eateries, including Firewheel Café and Shellers Barrelhouse Bar, offer menus that include family favorites such as chicken tenders, burgers, french fries, and wings, along with a variety of healthier options such as fresh fruit and salads, and more indulgent options such as the loaded Shiner Bock queso. A full bar offering wine, beer, and mixed drinks (think pina colada and margaritas poolside) is closeby with specialty non-alcoholic drinks available as well. Keep in mind that there are no outside food or drinks allowed. Directly outside of the pool area is a food truck offering a small selection of tacos and bbq… Texas food at its best!

This taco and BBQ truck is an option for quick and tasty food right outside of the family pool area.

For special events or extra coverage from the bright rays from the Texas sun, cabana rentals are available both on the family side and adult-only side for an additional charge. The cabanas come equipped with seating, towels, water bottles, a $25 cafe credit, and a television. Half-day rentals are $150 from 9 am – 1 pm with full-day (8 am – 8:30 pm) rentals available for $300.

After our family’s fun day at the resort, bonus fun was had while walking back to the car where we got to visit with the resident alpacas and longhorns. If you’d like to spend additional time on the property either before or after your swim, enjoy the resort’s brand new sports court which includes pickleball, basketball, and tennis. Or, take a walk along the trail on the bank of the Colorado River, sit in one of the many rocking chairs while enjoying the view, use one of their onsite bikes for a ride around the property, or play several yard-games. The “daycation” experience also includes the activities listed in the resort’s daily activity guide which can be accessed either at the property or by visiting their Facebook page.

For additional on-property experiences at an extra cost, consider booking a tee time at the resort’s acclaimed Wolfdancer Golf Club. The 18-hole, 7,205-yard course runs through the area’s river valley terrain of rolling prairies and heavily-wooded ridgeline. Or, enjoy pure relaxation by scheduling treatment at the resort’s Spa Django. Guests can choose from several signature treatment options or enjoy the brand new float suite, a zero-gravity and sensory-free float experience that promotes deep relaxation.

A nice catch & release fishing spot along the golf course at Hyatt Lost Pines Resort & Spa.

The water park is open daily from 8 am – 10 pm.

Day pass rates start at $50 per adult; $25 per child; infants are free. The fee may increase on weekends, holidays, and based on availability.

Parking: Self-parking is available for a fee of $18; valet is available for $38.

Note: While one can easily change into swimsuits in the restrooms, there are no changing rooms or lockers available at the pool, so plan accordingly.

Book your day of family fun at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort & Spa here.
